The past month and a half I have been working on developing new work for my first ever solo show. I have been working in the studio nearly non-stop to work out ideas, try our new materials and process to better form my thoughts for this work. I’m currently working on a commission and as soon as I complete the commission I will begin working on creating portraits of people to be used in the new work. Much of this work came about from the Quaker’s notion of “plain Speech” , “to refuse to give into the vanity of the world and the unspiritual conventional order”. Previously my work has nearly every inch of covered in patterns and imagery, for my new work, I want to communicate as much as possible with a limited vocabulary, saying what the work demands with short visual phrases and leaving room for others ideas and exploration. It’s not minimalism yet, this work I want nothing of me in.
